Because of its misleading title, this important New England periodical has gone virtually unnoticed by all except a handful of experts on New England genealogical research. Its primary claim on the genealogist lay in its subject matter--exhaustive transcriptions of vital source material, its stated purpose being to collect hitherto unpublished genealogical matter from original sources; namely, state, county, town, and church records; and to abstract court files, probate records, and deeds. Although the intention was to cover the records of New England as a whole, its real focus is on the early records of Massachusetts, especially Plymouth County, Bristol County, Kingston, Yarmouth, E. Yarmouth, Falmouth, and Weymouth. Because the records were collected and compiled systematically, many from sources no longer in existence, the work achieved a unity which makes it today a reference book of the very first caliber.
